The Hotel Espana originally opened its doors in 1859 under the name Fonda de Espana, and was later renovated by the celebrated modernist architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner in the early twentieth century. The work was deservedly recognised by Barcelona City Council in 1904, it was awarded with a Diploma of Honour for "best establishment decorated in the artistic-ornamental style", and has therefore always been considered a jewel in the crown of Catalonian modernism in the city of Barcelona.Hotel Espana's 2010 renovation project has recaptured the spirit that Domenech i Montaner conceived for the hotel. The hotel's modernist spaces have been restored to their original design, while, at the same time, installing the latest in technology, design and comfort.
